Nephrology

Introduction

At Picaso Hospital, one of the medical specialties we cover is nephrology. Nephrology is the branch of medicine focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of kidney-related conditions. While urologists treat conditions affecting the entire urinary tract, nephrologists focus specifically on the kidneys. As such, our nephrologists work closely together with our urologists.

Understanding your kidneys

Each person has two kidneys — bean-shaped organs roughly similar to the size of your fist. They are located just below your rib cage on either side of your spine. They are your body's personal filtration system, working 24/7 to clean your blood, removing waste products and extra water, which are then excreted as urine. Your kidneys also help control blood pressure, stimulate the production of red blood cells, and keep your bones strong by managing essential nutrients like calcium and phosphorus.

Apart from filtering waste, your kidneys meticulously balance the levels of many substances in your blood, like various salts and minerals, and help to regulate your body's fluid balance. When your kidneys are healthy, they efficiently handle these tasks without any issues. However, if your kidneys are damaged, harmful wastes can build up in your body, your blood pressure can rise, and your body may retain excess fluid and not make enough red blood cells. This is why taking care of your kidneys through a healthy diet, regular exercise, and avoiding harmful substances like excessive alcohol and certain drugs is crucial for your overall health.

Nephrology services at Picaso Hospital

The first major function of the nephrology services at Picaso Hospital is diagnosis. Usually through blood or urine tests, our nephrologists will be able to identify and assess the condition of your kidneys. Depending on the condition, further testing may be required, such as through biopsies or medical imaging (i.e. ultrasound).

Conditions we treat include:

  • Hypertension and other related disorders
  • Renal/electrolyte/acid-based disorders
  • General kidney diseases

Treatments may include medication or prescribing lifestyle changes. If surgical intervention is necessary, the nephrologist will refer you to a urologist.
